Sara Aratake – clarinet

“I have been interested in different cultures from a young age because I have identified with two cultures all of my life. Although I was born in Japan, I grew up in the United States.”

” I believe that the sharing of cultures is important in promoting a greater understanding and acceptance between people around the world. Since coming to Finland, I have been inspired by the innovative compositions by Finnish composers and would love to share these works with new audiences!”

Sara Aratake was born in Japan but grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She began to play the clarinet in her middle school band program when she was 11. Since then, she has been featured on U.S. national public radio program, From the Top, as well as performing as a soloist with the Queens College Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony. During the summers she has participated in the Sarasota Music Festival in 2016 and 2017. She has also enjoyed performing in orchestras such as in the Orford Music Festival Orchestra on their tour to Busan, Korea as well as the Orchestra of the Americas on their European Tour in the summer 2018. In addition, she was an apprentice with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2017-2018. This summer, Sara is looking forward to visiting Mexico as part of the 2019 Orchestra of Americas tour. In her spare time she enjoys eating diverse foods, blogging, and traveling.
