Cambodia x Finland 2019

About our Project:

We believe that music can be a mode of communication that transcends language and provide an experience of connection between people without barriers. For this reason, we would like to use the genre of classical music to collaborate and share music from two extremely different parts of the world: Finland and Cambodia.

What did it involve?

We commissioned a new piece from Cambodian composer, Bosba Panh called Les danseuses de Rodin. In May 2019, we premiered the piece in Cambodia. In November 2019, we were able to premiere the same piece in Finland. We also gave some masterclasses and workshops in Cambodia at the Royal University of Fine Arts and local music schools about our experiences in Finland and about contemporary music. At the same time, we reached out to Cambodian musicians to chat and exchange ideas about music, culture, and life during our trip. After our trip, we held presentation/concerts to share our experiences in Cambodia to the community in Helsinki.

Activities we did in Cambodia

We did many workshops and a premiere performance of Bosba’s piece at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Cambodia. The students also shared their traditional instruments with us. It was a memorable experience for us!

We also went to Soundskool, a local music school, to give some workshops and small concerts! It was a great experience to chat with the teachers at these schools about their experiences in Cambodia and also to show our instruments and music to the kids!

On top of our musical activities, we also saw many cultural places like the Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, and ate the local food!

Activities in Finland

After coming back to Finland we gave several performances of Bosba’s piece and also shared about our experience in Cambodia.
